Plague in media industry – Video piracy

piracyA Well-known fact is “India’s effort to video piracy have met with little success”. In may forms the success rate is zero and even negative. Many of us know that “Video piracy” is a big threat to today’s entertainment media but we don’t stop using them. I had come across many such sellers, viewers/users and distributors, But the incident happened during my travel from Madurai to Chennai triggered this Blog post. I have boarded a government SETC bus on madurai IBS (integrated Bus station). This is my first travel on Air-conditioned SETC airbus the look and feel of the bus, the facility they provide are too goos. After 10 – 20 minutes a movie played in the attached TV, to my amazement movie title is “DHASAVADHARAM stared by Kamala hasan”, A super hit movie released across the globe just few weeks before. Now playing in from of my own eyes in a brand new 27” sony LCD screen. Although the movie failed to impress me, the incident is not a just like that day-today incident. It is more than a movie. Movies are made for masses; a producer can enjoy a reasonable return only through a cinema theater screening with a collection on per head per view basis. But pirated CD/DVD distribution are redefined for multi user, multiply time viewable, multi copy medium. This kind of pirated CD/DVD distribution affects the collection very much in following ways,

  1. Movie watched by an individual (INR 30 –70) Vs watched by group of audience by INR 30 CD/DVD spending
  2. Negative or positive feed back of the movie spreads fast through DVD/CD than cinema theaters
  3. Pirated DVD/CDs are not from actual investors. i.e. investment is by some one and returns to some other one.

The end result is entertainment is to the mass and empty hands to the investors. If a pirated movie can be shown in a government run transport system with a reason as entertainment how can you remove piracy from other system? If the meaning of theft is “illegal taking of others property” than Video piracy is also theft. Stringent law with effective control system is mandatory to stop video piracy. The Governing body has created the laws in papers but papers are just papers. As Paper vegetable cannot be cooked. Unless we think and stop this plague, big hope on Indian entertainment media to generate future GDP will be in vein. I feel very bad even now … I didn’t stop the bus conductor from playing the movie because “MY personal greed is so powerful and it persuaded over my personal ethics to watch the movie with no cost of investment”. Now I write this on my blog cos since july 20th (my travel date) I stopped watching movies on pirated CD/DVD… STOP PIRACY SAVE THE MEDIA
